Kings of War Army Challenge Month 1
Live from my Instagram.A photo posted by Age of Dreddmar (@mattdredd) on
I've blundered my way into starting another project. This is more of a Tale of x Gamers type affair, in so much that I'm going to try and build the army in monthly stages - for the least amount of money possible.
This is what the army currently stands like at Month 1, it's what I've managed to scavenge together from the Mantic Kickstarters I've backed. So my total spend is currently: £0. A good start.
The current army list:
1 Overmaster on Greater Abyssal
10 Abyssal Berserkers
5 Gargoyles
20 Immortal Guard x 2 (currently invisible)
6 Lesser Obsidian Golems (also invisible)

Kickstarter Update! Mantic Does HeroQuest.
Throwing caution to the wind, Mantic have launched their newest Kickstarter (and it's still not Warpath V2 - the Veer-myn will have to wait) Dungeon Saga: The Dwarf King's Quest - a surprising ballsy move considering GW, MB and King.com's lawyers haven't done anything recently justify their commission.
Lawsuit jokes aside (although they did manage to get themselves in trouble with Geek & Sundry) their campaign is chugging along well, with almost $360 thousand dollars raised with 18 days left to go. If it picks up the pace slightly, it can easily become Mantics biggest Kickstarter to date.

Sadly, this isn't KoW: Skirmish or, what i'd prefer, Kings of Warbands, It's still a cool looking retro dungeon crawler very much inspired by HeroQuest (and the solo play rules are intriguing... it seems entirely possible for you to run the game as the GM for AI-Deck controlled Heroes and Villains... an odd prospect).
Plus the KS-Exclusive Resin collectors editions are too good to pass up!
Anyway here's what your $100 will get you:

Reports of my demise are greatly exaggerated! Sadly I've been quite busy as of late, and I've had to make a choice between hobby time or blogging time (also, as you'll see, my camera/photo booth is a bit crap, so I've not really had much content to upload). But I have done something! I've broken open my copy of Deadzone and made a start on building up a Plague faction. So far I've built 3 second generation Plague, photo inbound!
Now, you'll see a couple of mould lines in those images. I know they're there. One day I'll get into my issues with Restic (and, in particular, Mantics Restic) but today is not that day!
More pictures once I've got a better photo setup.

Mars Attacks Kickstarter!
Look at that! Now, whilst I've backed Mantic's latest Kickstarter, I'm not a huge Mars Attacks fan (it was always more popular stateside than over here). But what i am, is a huge Judge Dredd fan.
Mantic's latest update had this as an upcoming goal.
Well, I'm sold.

A quick Hobby Update!
Just a quick update on what I've been working on. This month, as per my hobby resolution, i haven't really been messing around with much GW stuff (but, from the leaks, that's about to change);
Firstly, I've dipped back into Kings of War and decided to start putting together a Undead Samurai army, I've only got a Necromancer with 10 skeletons and 5 Zombies so far (these models take much longer to put together than i expected!) - Once I've found them, the Wraiths in the background are going to get some old Rackham Oni Masks.
Also, when I've not been messing around with undead samurai, I've started to pur together a Malifaux Arcanist Rail Crew Box (With the Rail Golem and Willie):
I've gone for a railway (no surprises there really...) theme for the bases - I was googling ideas for basing and found the idea to use model railway tracks, and they do look pretty cool. Awful to cut tho.
Anyway, that's all for now! I've got some gushing to do about the new WoC models, but I'll save that for another post.
One last thing! My copy of Sedition Wars has arrived!
I'm very impressed, although there is quite a bit of warping of my models .Which is a bit of a disappointment (a disappointment that's becoming a more and more common occurrence with models made from not-HDPE plastics - my most recent batch of Reaper Bones models has a couple that needed re-setting), but one that should be easily fixed (although, to play devils advocate, it's a bit like the Finecast situation - even though the fix is relatively simple, i shouldn't have to do it. But that's a different post all together.)

The cold dead...
When I started this unit, I didn't really like mantic's range of skeletons, but during the time it's taken to finish them, they've actually grown on me. Mantic's stuff in general usually takes a little while for me to come around to (except the zombies. They were amazing from the get go) - in general I like their stuff (it's like the old-school gw stuff, but in plastic), and the relatively low entry point (price wise) is always a plus.
Now I'm faced with a tough decision, do I start a veer-myn force now, or wait until the inevitable Warpath kickstarter.

Mantic (and more) on Kickstarter
Over the weekend Mantic Games started a Kickstarter campaign to help them raise $5000 to fund tooling and the like to bring forward the release of some models (including the werewolves - left). Jumping forward to today, they're at $43,000 with some really cool stuff on the horizon (the fight wagons at 50k have some serious potential).
Check it out here
At the moment I've pledged $50, but if it goes over $50k, I'm likely to up my pledge to $100 (the bonuses at $100 are just too good to pass up).
Aside from Mantic, Stuido Mcvey have started a Kickstarter to help production of Sedition Wars: Battle for Alabaster (think Space Hulk), which looks very nice indeed (the Strain models alone a cool enough) - $25 shipping to the UK is a little steep tho, now that it's funded I might just wait for its general release and pick up a copy.
Away from Kickstarter (but still with that Kickstarter feel) Avatars of War are going into the business of full armies and have launched a campaign on IndieGoGo to get a dwarf army into production (including dwarves riding war-bears) which sounds neat. They're only a day into their campaign and have already raised $2,600 of their $20,000 goal.
It seems like lot of the models they're wanting to produce will be in WarCast (their version of resin) and the last units they made in WarCast (Warriors of Apoc) suffered significant delays (they were released back at the beginning of the year and have only just started shipping out) due to unexpected demand. So it seems like further stressing an already stressed system wouldn't be a very good idea. That, and the fact that I'm not hugely interested in more dwarf models, means I'm going to watch this on from afar. Of course $20,000 would probably be enough for another spin-casting machine and operator (I believe WarCast is spin-cast) which could work though the backlog quicker.
In short, lots of nice things for the hobby coming soon!
